how to use PayPal with Capitec Bank

There is nothing more frustrating when you are trying to buy staff online through Paypal or Payfast and finding out it doesn’t work. Most of the time people are confused as to why it doesn’t work; they think it’s a technical error. I spent days trying to use Paypal to pay for online services and it kept on giving me errors until I decided to go to the bank to find out why this was happening. This is a short piece of content on what I learned on how to use Paypal with Capitec bank.

Getting the basics right

This article assumes that you have already created a PayPal account and want to know how to use it or withdraw from it using Capitec Bank. If you have not yet created a PayPal account then do that first before continuing with the contents of this article.

The most likely reason

The most likely reason why your PayPal account is not working with Capitec is because you are not authorised to buy staff online by Capitec. When you open a Capitec Bank account the ability to make online transactions is automatically off. This is why PayPal cannot process your transactions.

How do you solve this?

You solve this by going to the nearest branch of Capitec and personally asking them to allow you to make online transactions. Capitec bank only allows you to make transactions through the Capitec app by default, it doesn’t allow anything outside of that. Maybe this is part of consumer protection. As soon as they authorise you to make online transactions then you are good to go to start using PayPal with Capitec Bank.

How to link Capitec debit card to PayPal

To link your Capitec debit card to PayPal you will need to go to the official PayPal website and Sign Up for an account if you do not already have one. You will need to provide a few personal details about yourself such as your real name, email, country of birth and other details. You will be prompted to enter your debit card details. These details will be verified with Capitec bank and if all is well then you are good to go.

In the case of online shopping; you will have to go through the process of setting up your PayPal account first then when you shop online you will only be required to enter your debit card details including the cvv number and the transaction will be successful.

Update

This article focuses specifically on using PayPal as a payment gateway for online shopping. At the time of writing this article, it was also possible to withdraw funds from PayPal without using FNB. I did it multiple times when I was working with some people from India. I could also manage to add funds to my PayPal wallet and send them to someone abroad.

I haven’t used PayPal for a long time for internal transfer withdrawals. However, it now seems as if it’s not possible to withdraw funds from PayPal without using FNB. This is something I will test very soon and the article will be updated as soon as I have an answer.

Why is Capitec taking so long to understand that business banking for individuals is going online and PayPal is a huge part of that or why don’t they create something similar to PayPal and let us know about it? This is one area of banking that Capitec is neglecting or they does it on purpose! Now why is that? Can’t you remove the barriers to this? This is where service & technology are moving towards.
